FIGHTER INFO
Outside the cage, Robbie Lawler of Granite City, Ill., is one of the most unassuming, soft-spoken, courteous and polite young men you’ll ever meet. Inside, he has long been regarded as one of the world’s top middleweights, an athletic, well-conditioned crowd-pleaser known for utterly destroying opponents with an aggressive, unbashful, swing-for-the-fences, almost, at times, reckless style of fighting.
The 5-foot-11, 28-year-old was born in San Diego, Calif., but relocated with his family to Bettendorf, Iowa, at an early age. At 16, Lawler became a protégé of Mixed Martial Arts legend Pat Miletich. Lawler, who turned pro at 19 in April 2001, fought for years out of the Miletich Fighting Systems headquarters in Davenport, Iowa, but left two years ago to join the H.I.T. Squad fight gym in Granite City captained by former Miletich teammate and all-time great Matt Hughes.
Lawler’s last fight took place on the Strikeforce Miami fight card at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, FL on January 30, 2010 where he knocked out Melvin “No Mercy” Manhoef in dramatic fashion late in the first round after being dominated for much of the fight. Lawler’s next contest will take place on June 16 at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on the Strikeforce Live fight card when he goes toe-to-toe with the ever-popular Renato “Babalu” Sobral in a catch-weight contest.
